Alexander Scott Hughes 1973-
Alexander Scott Hughes was born at the Indian Hospital to Mary and Jim Hughes (Cherokee) in August 1973. He grew up in central Phoenix where he was exposed to a wide variety of cultural and artistic influences (from graffiti to fine art). He began selling his work at the age of 16 to a variety of collectors now ranging from California to New York.
Although he is mainly a self-taught artist, Alexander received formal training at both the Art Institute of Phoenix and Phoenix College. Alexander's paintings encompass a range of styles from abstracts to portraiture. With his distinctive style, Alexander became a significant contributor to the art scene in the Phoenix area with showings in major Phoenix area galleries such as the monOrchid gallery, the Alwun House Foundation, and Tempe's Wet Paint gallery.
In 2002, his artwork was featured in the academic journal, Bad Subjects vol. 61, "The Aesthetics of Violence." He has shown in a variety of juried exhibitions such as Artlink's 9th Annual Juried Art Exhibition and the Mark Woolley Gallery's Alien & Sedition show in the famed Pearl Arts district of Portland, Oregon where he gained national exposure.
